Undersea optical fiber cables are the lifeblood of the modern world. If these strands connecting continents are destroyed, the world at our fingertips will suddenly come to a standstill. With the total shutdown of internet services, systems like Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp will completely disappear. A situation will arise where searching for information or exchanging messages globally becomes impossible. This does not only affect entertainment or communication; as the banking sector and financial transactions falter, the global market will crash. ATMs will stop working and foreign exchange will become impossible.
The impact of this collapse on the employment sector is beyond imagination. Millions of people working in the IT sector will face instantaneous job loss. It will also directly affect the jobs of employees in banking and e-commerce sectors that rely on online services. For those working from home and those collaborating with foreign companies, income sources will completely close as communication becomes impossible.
Air travel and freight movement will be totally disrupted. Since aircraft navigation and ticket booking depend on the internet, the transport sector will stagnate. We might return to an old era where we had to wait months to send messages from one corner of the world to another. Since power distribution networks and hospital services are based on digital systems, this will also lead to a major humanitarian disaster. All the achievements of this century built by science will vanish, and the world will retreat into a dark, ancient Stone Age. Though we are technologically advanced, the reality that it all depends on these thin cables is quite terrifying. The reality is very scary.
