Police - Case - Judge - Justice - Advocacy - IAS - IPS... whatever it may mean, whoever leads the administration, they must value humanity
Panampilly Govinda Menon, N. Sreekantan Nair, Parayil Shamsuddin, T.A. Majeed MLA, my very close relative PAP Muhammad Kannu MLA who won from Shankhumukham in Thiruvananthapuram (from the League), Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair, Jose Prakash, Abdul Khader (Prem Nazir), and Abdul Wahab (Prem Nawaz) were all close relatives or close friends. P.K. Vasudevan Nair, the former Chief Minister, was a Member of Parliament at that time. My father was staying with him in Delhi. During that period, my father faced an unexpected issue from the Railways – a suspension. It was a problem that could have been easily resolved. We tried to resolve this issue quickly through the Railway Board Chairman, trusting the assurance of a prominent political leader (an MP) and Prem Nazir Mama. My father initially intended to meet Panampilly Govinda Menon, the then Union Railway Minister, whom he knew. However, Prem Nazir Mama was closer to and a very close friend of an MP from another party. Following Nazir Mama's advice that this person would take care of everything, we changed our approach.
At that time, Malayali political leaders and MPs from Kerala did not have much standing or value in New Delhi, in many Central Government offices. We realized this precisely when we received a registered post at home stating, "You are dismissed from the service." The only option left for my father was to approach the High Court with this letter. We went to Vanchiyoor and entrusted the case to Subramanian Potti, a brilliant and prominent lawyer. A year later, the High Court's order came. A bench headed by the strict High Court Justice Gopalan Nambiar quashed (destroyed) the Railway's order and mandated his respectful reinstatement. Would the Railway let it go? Months later, the Railway filed another case with the Division Bench to review the order. By then, Subramanian Potti had become the Advocate General of Kerala. My father went to see him. The Advocate General of Kerala assured my father that there was no legal impediment for him to argue a case against the Central Government, and that he himself could handle the case.
Days passed. One day, my father received information from Delhi that Subramanian Potti was going to be appointed as a High Court Judge by the President of India. Before taking his oath as a High Court Justice, Subramanian Potti Sir kept his word to us. He argued the case, and we won again. The same order was issued once more. Subramanian Potti then took office as a High Court Judge. However... there will always be people around us who are determined to harm someone. The Railway took the case to the Full Bench of the High Court. The Full Bench is a court consisting of the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court and two other justices. The Railway approached the court again, demanding clarity in the law if my father was to be reinstated in the Railways.
It was the intervention of the political MP, who was a sincere friend of Prem Nazir Mama and had interfered from the beginning, that provoked the Railway so much. We then found another lawyer and entrusted the case to him. Despite the Central Government repeatedly postponing and then rejecting his appointment as a judge, the very prominent and famous S. Easwara Iyer appeared in court for us.
Days later, the High Court heard the case. A very strong verdict was delivered. The Railway should not engage in any more evasive talk. The court ordered the Railway to immediately reinstate Mr. Muhammad Khan and report the reinstatement order to the High Court.
For nine years of being jobless and suffering, all the Railway gave my father was a few coins called "SUBSISTENCE ALLOWANCE." We no longer had the assets to pursue another case for the nine years' worth of back pay. Without understanding the situation, many people stabbed us in the back. By then, my mother's only brother, my uncle, who was fifty-eight or sixty years old, started going to the hospital daily with various illnesses. It was my mother's elder brother's wife and eldest son who benefited from this and pulled the strings from the forefront to create discord among the siblings, as all the relatives later came and told us. That's fate. All these are lessons I've learned from my experiences at this age. I know how far to go if a problem arises. Therefore, I will not go and stand subserviently for anyone's recommendation. I will only do what I can do directly. I will not pay attention to any Shubhan who says "I might mention it" in my absence. I pray that all good things happen to everyone with goodness in their hearts. Praying for a good heart. Don't harm anyone. Don't break promises... the compassionate Almighty will take care of the rest.
